About Irwin’s Bike & Sports
The Irwin story begins in the early 1940s with Mr. Wilbur Irwin. Mr. Irwin wanted to try and make a living in which he could spend as much time with his family. After having worked at a parts shop for a Ford dealer in Des Moines, Iowa, he decided to explore selling auto parts out of the trunk of his Buick Roadmaster, and soon thereafter, he added sporting goods to his trunk. Soon, after he had thus established a client base, Mr. Irwin established Irwin’s Bike and Sports in 1946. He phased out the auto parts, after realizing how much bike and sporting equipment thrived in his area of town. He was the only dealer in town that carried Wilson and Schwinn…and needless to say, the business has carried on for all these years!
Sixty years down the road now, Jack Davis owns Irwin’s Bike & Sports. Jack joined Irwin’s in 1969, after having gone to school to be an aircraft mechanic. Don’t ask! By 1985, Jack owned half the store and in 1998, when Mr. Irwin decided to retire, he took over all of it.
Jack isn’t the only person to have come to Irwin’s and stayed on. Pretty much all of Irwin’s staff have come together under Irwin’s roof after extensive experience in the fields of bikes and sports. It’s a very well-educated and experienced environment at Irwin’s and there is a lot to be said for that!
